Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is commonly used to treat stomach and esophagus problems, like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and to relieve symptoms of these conditions, such as heartburn.

There is not a generic version of Dexilant currently available in the United States. However, it is available from India now and can help you save up to 90%.

What is Dexilant and How It Works?

Dexilant is a brand-name prescription medication of dexlansoprazole, which belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Dexilant helps shut down pumps in your stomach that produce acid to help digest your food.

Medications within a class of medications work the same way in your body. Dexilant is approved for use in adults and in children ages 12 years and older.

What Are the Strengths and Forms of Brand Name Dexilant?

Brand name Dexilant comes as a capsule. It is available in two strengths:

Brand name Dexilant (Dexlansoprazole) Delayed-release Capsules 30 mg

Brand name Dexilant (Dexlansoprazole) Delayed-release Capsules 60 mg

The key to Dexilant‘s timed release of medication is its Dual Delayed Release technology, which combines two different types of granules in one pill.

Dexilant begins to deliver the first release of medication within an hour of taking your pill. Then, around 4–5 hours later, a second release of medication arrives. The link between two releases and therapeutic benefit is not known.

What Are the Strengths and Forms of Generic Dexilant?

Generic Dexilant (Dexlansoprazole MR) Capsules 30 mg

Generic Dexilant (Dexlansoprazole MR) Capsules 60 mg

Dexlansoprazole MR is a modified-release formulation of dexlansoprazole, an enantiomer of lansoprazole, which uses an innovative dual delayed release (DDR) technology designed to prolong the plasma dexlansoprazole concentration versus time profile and provide extended duration of acid suppression with once-daily dosing.

The DDR formulation uses different types of granules with pH-dependent dissolution profiles that release dexlansoprazole at different times and over a longer period of time.

How Much Does Generic and Brand Name Dexilant Cost?

The brand name Dexilant is not cheap in the United States. The average retail price of brand name Dexilant (60 mg) is around $11 per capsule (source from Goodrx.com, Mar 10, 2021).

Fortunately, there are ways to save

Firstly, the same brand name Dexilant manufactured by same company, Takeda, is only $3.40 per capsule when coming from Canada.

Secondly, generic Dexilant from India is $1.14 per capsule. You can get these affordable and safe medications from a certified international pharmacy.

Does Dexilant Have Side Effects?

Studies of more than 4500 adults showed that Dexilant had a low occurrence of side effects. The most common side effects in adults were diarrhea (4.8%), stomach pain (4.0%), nausea (2.9%), common cold (1.9%), vomiting (1.6%), and gas (1.6%). All of these side effects were seen in less than 5% of patients.

The most common side effects in children age 12 to 17 years, were headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, and pain or swelling (inflammation) in the mouth, nose, or throat.

How Long Can You Safely Take Dexilant?

Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional.

Prescription Dexilant capsules are used in children age 12 to 17 years for 4 weeks to treat heartburn related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), for up to 8 weeks to heal acid-related damage to the lining of the esophagus (called erosive esophagitis or EE), and for up to 16 weeks to continue healing of EE and relief of heartburn.

It is not known if Dexilant is safe and effective in children under age 12 years. Dexilant is not effective for symptoms of GERD in children under 1 year of age.

In adults, persistent heartburn two or more days a week, despite treatment and diet changes, could be GERD, also known as acid reflux disease (ARD). Prescription Dexilant capsules are used in adults for 4 weeks to treat heartburn related to GERD, for up to 8 weeks to heal acid-related damage to the lining of the esophagus, and for up to 6 months to continue healing of EE and relief of heartburn. Most damage (erosions) heals in 4 to 8 weeks.
